Abby had a rough day today - lots of running free along a lovely trail along the Platte River...
Bad weather rolling in while we were parked in Douglas WY. Luckily, nothing much happened; just a little hail and rain. Whew.
We stopped at Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monumentl. Here is an excerpt from the National Park Service site regarding the name change:
In 1991, the U.S. Congress changed the name of the battlefield and ordered construction of a privately funded memorial for the American Indians.
"The public interest," according to Public Law 102-210, 'will best be served by establishing a memorial...to honor and recognize the Indians who fought to preserve their land and culture."
On December 10, 1991, President George Bush signed legislation to change the battefield’s name from “Custer” to “Little Bighorn” Battlefield National Monument and to create the Indian Memorial. The law authorized a national design competition, construction of the memorial, and acceptance of donations.
There was no tribute to the Indians who fought and died when our family visited about 50 years ago! "Peace Through Unity" - I like the change.
And for my brother and sister-in-law, Mike and Nancy (who are Arrowhead Hunters)...nice specimens in the museum at the Battlefield Museum.
Now, we are hunkered down in Reed Point MT, waiting for the weather to improve and get some repair work done on Liz's and my rigs...
